Animism

 Would anyone care to explain the idea behind animism? I have been trying to find my own beliefs after deciding I'm not entirely with the Catholic Faith. I believe in reincarnation. I believe in the ability for humans to influence nature, which my parents think isn't possible.
I want some sort of grounding in a religion or faith system that rings true to me. I don't know much about animism but would love to learn.
